The Billy Bragg show at the Club Soda

// June 19th, 2008 // 1 Comment » // music // music

Billy Bragg rocked the the Club Soda last night. He touched everyone with his fierce vulnerability and we-can-change-the-world message. I was inspired! It was like his songs went straight to my heart. After the show, he came out to meet the fans and I lined up to meet the man that got me started on this songwriting thing. What is it about meeting famous people that instantly makes you loose your cool? Instead of saying “Hey, good show dude!” I was like “you passed on the flame to me” or something like that. I think he was a little freaked out. The rabid fan thing: “Is this guy going to stalk me?” Then I handed him my CD and he was very gracious. He thanked me for it and told me he would listen to it. That’s kind of cool. I’ve listened to almost all of his records profusely and now he has one of mine! Him and Leonard Cohen. I wonder who is the next star I am going to stalk in order to give them my CD?

Here’s another review coming in from Alberta on March 23, 2008:

Murray Green
Editor

“Matt Lipscombe has taken his folk music on the road as a solo act.
After breaking away from Montreal group “Me Mom and Morgentaler,” Lipscombe has emerged as a promising new singer-songwriter. With his background in folk music, Lipscombe has added his own version with his debut album Folk Tales. His music has drawn comparisons to Paul Simon, Billy Bragg and Ben Harper.
Since the release of his album last September, he has impressed audiences with his acoustic guitar and his well-crafted songs. His three-piece band includes Sage Reynolds on bass and Mark Nelson on snare and brushes.

His former band drew interest after it was not allowed to play at a religious college because of its name. After many tours the band sold 50,000 albums. His new group has moved towards a complete folk sound with less rock and roll.
Although Lipscombe has a huge following in Quebec, it wasn’t until he released his Folk Tales in English that the rest of the country started to take notice.
The new album is really a mixed bag of songs, with a wide range of ideas and tunes. There are bound to be one or two that people will enjoy. People might not be able to agree on which song they like the best, but they do agree that he has some talent in folk music.
Check www.myspace.com/mattlipscombe for more information.”

David Reed of the Belleville Intelligencer writes today in the CD review section:

“Emerging from the Montreal’s acclaimed band Me Mom and Morgentaler, Matt Lipscombe is a singer-songwriter that draws comparisons to Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Paul Simon and even John Lennon.

His debut record Folk Tales was released to rave reviews in Montreal and is now being distributed across Canada. The production is clean and raw, with many tracks recorded in Lipscombe’s old loft, on his back porch and at his new home. Instrumentation is sparse with just guitar, bass and drums (with the exception of cello on one track and Tibetan bells on another).

Highlights include “Strange Music,” “Faith,” “Make More Money,” “I Am Flying” and “Sugar.”

I had such a great time at my show in Quebec City on Thursday March 27th at this great bar called the Sacrilege. People were so friendly and warm. After the show these lovely people from the crowd invited me to their house for a late pizza dinner. We had a great time. The bar even invited me to join their bowling team! You see, it seems that next weekend, a Quebec City radio station is putting me and my wife up in a nice hotel so we can bowl with them in a fundraiser for the community radio station.

Great Review from Stratford Ontario, Home of the Shakespeare festival

The Beacon Herald of Stratford Ontario

Montreal-based Matt Lipscombe first honed his craft with the band Me Mom and Morgentaler. The folk, singer-songwriter has gone solo and released Folk Tales,an album that draws on his appreciation of the likes of Paul Simon and Ben Harper. But you can also hear hints of the Jack Johnson sound.Good songs, quality musicianship and pleasing vocals may make Lipscombe a national star instead of a local one.The album’s strongest tracks are the bluesy Mexico City Subway Song and the Dylanesque Leaves In Fall.
