Cornwall’s Seaway News review of Folk Tales

// February 15th, 2008 // No Comments » // music // music

Roxanne Delage writes: Formerly of the famed Montréal band “Me Mom and Morgentaler,” Matt Lipscombe’s first solo release, “Folk Tales”—with a cool photograph of Lipscombe on the sleeve—is a slick collection of folk inspired songs with an adult contemporary pop/rock flavour. I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about this CD as many of the tracks are quite radio worthy—perfect for any mood.

Folk Tales
Steve Guimond

Matt Lipscombe is as Montreal as Montreal gets. Onetime bassist for Me, Mom & Morgentaler, he’s been plugging away at a long, winding, deep folk tunnel since the dissolution of said ska new wavers, handling his own songwriting, acoustic guitar, bass and vocal duties. Folk Tales aptly sums up his most recent full-length, songs from this city in the keys of pop, mellowed blues, jazz and country. Guests include Patrick Watson, Becky Foon and Creature’s Sid Zanforlin. 3.5 stars.

Charlottetown’s The Guardian

// February 7th, 2008 // No Comments » // music // music

Last week, a really sweet review came out from Charlottetown, PEI’s The Guardian from Doug Gallant. It’s wonderful to have a review that mentions the Beatles and Jack Johnson.

Lipscombe’s latest effort

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s something about Matt Lipscombe’s latest solo effort, Folk Tales, that makes me want to drop it into the tray of my CD player and just leave it there.

It’s certainly not because it grabs you by the lapels and shakes you.

It’s not that kind of record. Nor is it the kind of record that makes that little light in your head go off because it sparked some great personal awakening.

Perhaps it’s the simple fact that Lipscombe, former principal songwriter for the eclectic ’90s band Me Mom & Morgentaler, has crafted an album of songs that are just plain easy on the head.

Some days you need that.

Although punched up here and there with bass and drums Folk Tales is, as the title suggests, primarily an album of acoustic folk songs or rather folkish songs, laid back, melodic, at times poetic, reminiscent in some ways of early Simon & Garfunkel.

But he also ventures into other territory.

Faith and I Am Flying, for example, sound like Magical Mystery Tour-era Beatles songs.

Sugar sounds like a Jack Johnson song.

Very Big Fortress is one part Kurt Weill, one part Ray Davies.

Folk Tales has the comfort level of that baggy, moth-eaten sweater you just can’t bring yourself to throw out because when you put it on after all these years it still makes you feel cozy.

Maybe that’s what keeps me coming back to this record.

Choice offerings here include Sugar, Leaves In Fall, Faith, Make More Money and The Changing Room.

St-John’s NFL The Telegram Review

My publicist has also informed me of another short review this week in Saint-John’s (NF) The Telegram:

Matt Lipscombe
“Folk Tales”

A Quebec-English folkie with a nylon-string guitar, Matt Lipscombe evokes more Davy Jones-era David Bowie than the new-root inspirations his bio lists.
A bit of soul, a touch of jazz and underlying drama make “Folk Tales” a perfect accompaniment to a glass of red on a snowy Sunday afternoon.

Red Deer Express Review

I am so happy to have such a glowing review in the Red Deer Express this week! Thanks to Mark Weber for his words.

If you have trouble reading the image, here is the text from the article:

Folk Tales
Matt Lipscombe
Independent

There’s nothing like the simplicity and warmth of acoustic guitar to fire up a performance. Folkster Matt Lipscombe, who hails from Montreal, plays beautifully as showcased on his latest disc Folk Tales. From the sonic twists and turns of opening cut Sugar and the rhythmic snap of Strange Music to the haunting piano opening of Very Big Fortress, Lipscombe’s originality overflows. Sung in a slightly lower register, Heroes and Promises shows yet another side to this talented artist’s versatility both via voice and instrumental strength. Lipscombe isn’t shy of trying new things either – Mexico City Subway Song clips along with an attractive swagger, while Walk the Streets Alone delves squarely back into that authentic acoustic richness once again. A singer-songwriter in the folk tradition, Lipscombe draws inspiration from masters including Paul Simon, Billy Bragg, Ben Harper and Ani di Franco. Best of all, he’s a true original. Influences may seep in, but he knows precisely what he wants to create. Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Good times at the Casa!

// December 14th, 2007 // No Comments » // music // music

My friend Bertrand Viret’s band, Deleplage took the stage at the Casa del Popolo last night and immediately got funky. Bertrand even pulled out his Jimmi Hendrix guitar pedal, much to the surprise of everyone and let ‘er rip.

Cold snow was blowing outside but we were warm and cosy in a room surrounded by friendly faces. When my band hit the stage, the soundman cut the stereo music. There was dead air so we started the show, despite the fact that our bass-player (Sage Reynolds) was in the bathroom!He jumped in half-way through the tune and it was smooth sailing over rough seas after that! It was nice to see people dancing and the soul clap that everyone hit was awesome!
