I’m going to Nashville! It’s always been a dream of mine to go to that songwriting mecca. I hope to meet with some publishers who can place some of my songs with artists that don’t write their own songs (such as Rod Stewart: “Hey Rod, I have a song for you!”) Anyways, I got time off work May 17th to May 30th. My wife Vivian and I are going to hit the road and drive straight into the Southland chasing that dream. We’ll be staying at the SOCAN house (this organization will be putting us up for free! Isn’t that nice?)

Much like Harry Potter’s room under the stairs, my cousin Andrew’s studio is a glorified walk-in closet….but it sounds so good! While the wind was howling outside, Andrew and I were locked into that closet for two days straight. We came out with the bed tracks for 11 songs! We are so pleased with the way it sounds. The record is going to have a great vibe. We recorded those 11 songs live-off-the-floor: vocals, acoustic guitar and electric guitar. We are going to add some bass and some background vocals to some of the songs. Some of them we are going to leave as they are ’cause we don’t want to mess with the magic. I can’t wait to share it with everyone. This weekend, I will be recording more songs, especially of the fingerpicking variety. I will keep you posted.

On Saturday November 21st, My cousin Andrew and I, (together we are The Lipscombes) are going to be playing at one of our favourite clubs: The Bal du Lézard in Québec City. It’s going to be a rockin’ night, I can feel it. The people in Quebec City are awesome. The vibe is right. These days we are rehearsing and getting psyched to perform. My cousin, Andrew Lipscombe is an amazing electric guitarist. He always plays those sweet soulful blues notes that bring out the feeling of the music. “Can you feel it?” he always asks. You can check out our project by clicking on the Butterfly track on this page. Hope to see you at the show!

Here is the info:

Show date: Saturday November 21st 9:30PM.

The address of The Bal du Lézard is 1049 3e Avenue in the Limoilou district of Quebec City. The show starts at 9:30. Cover is $5.

I just got back from New York. What a blast! Vivian and I performed at this open-mic variety show which featured avant-garde films, music, dance-poetry and collective audience massage!(I kid you not, only in New York!). We also chanced upon Woody Allen’s band playing a hole-in-a-wall. We did a pilgrimage to the legendary Apollo in Harlem and we went to the beach down at Brighton Beach (the Russian area of Brooklyn). I dipped my feet in the Atlantic Ocean in October! We were staying in a charming cockroach-infested appartment in the East Village. A nice lady from Argentina was renting us her guest bed-room. We had some tasty Tajin at a Moroccon place called the Mogador and some amazing Malasian food in Little Italy. All around it was a wonderful trip. We will go back there…this time to play a show!

I just got back from DNA studios here in Montreal. We just recorded a song live in the studio and mixed it in under four hours. It was incredible. What a vibe! – Thanks to a large extent to studio guru Dave Sturton. As well, check out the great musicians that we had on this song. We had Sage Reynolds on the upright bass and Mark Nelson on the drums. Moe Clark did a guest appearance with us by singing some beautiful harmonies. The whole tune really cooks and what’s more, there is a message to this song.

It is called “Living by the Gun” and it is dedicated to Freddy Villanueva – the 18 year-old young man gunned down by police during a “routine” patrol of a Montreal North park. It was this tragic killing that sparked the subsequent Montreal North Riot. So this song is a plea for “something to be done” about the growing trend of violence in Montreal.

One can think of a few solutions: better activities for the youth: sports tournaments, hip-hop dancing festivals, studios for up and coming young rap artists…you know to keep them occupied and out of the youth gang scene. There has to be equally attractive options or the gangs will keep growing. As for the police, well gunning down innocent civilians is not going build bridges with the community! Download the song for free from my MySpace: www.myspace.com/mattlipscombe pass it on to your friends…let’s get a dialogue going!

Billy Bragg rocked the the Club Soda last night. He touched everyone with his fierce vulnerability and we-can-change-the-world message. I was inspired! It was like his songs went straight to my heart. After the show, he came out to meet the fans and I lined up to meet the man that got me started on this songwriting thing. What is it about meeting famous people that instantly makes you loose your cool? Instead of saying “Hey, good show dude!” I was like “you passed on the flame to me” or something like that. I think he was a little freaked out. The rabid fan thing: “Is this guy going to stalk me?” Then I handed him my CD and he was very gracious. He thanked me for it and told me he would listen to it. That’s kind of cool. I’ve listened to almost all of his records profusely and now he has one of mine! Him and Leonard Cohen. I wonder who is the next star I am going to stalk in order to give them my CD?
