I just got back from DNA studios here in Montreal. We just recorded a song live in the studio and mixed it in under four hours. It was incredible. What a vibe! – Thanks to a large extent to studio guru Dave Sturton. As well, check out the great musicians that we had on this song. We had Sage Reynolds on the upright bass and Mark Nelson on the drums. Moe Clark did a guest appearance with us by singing some beautiful harmonies. The whole tune really cooks and what’s more, there is a message to this song.
It is called “Living by the Gun” and it is dedicated to Freddy Villanueva – the 18 year-old young man gunned down by police during a “routine” patrol of a Montreal North park. It was this tragic killing that sparked the subsequent Montreal North Riot. So this song is a plea for “something to be done” about the growing trend of violence in Montreal.
One can think of a few solutions: better activities for the youth: sports tournaments, hip-hop dancing festivals, studios for up and coming young rap artists…you know to keep them occupied and out of the youth gang scene. There has to be equally attractive options or the gangs will keep growing. As for the police, well gunning down innocent civilians is not going build bridges with the community! Download the song for free from my MySpace: www.myspace.com/mattlipscombe pass it on to your friends…let’s get a dialogue going!
